We are invited, as we read the moments of awakening experienced by our ancestors, to remember those timeless openings within ourselves. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob provide paradigms for the spiritual path, and we are challenged to realize that path personally.

It is impressive that no matter how very dramatically things have changed over the many centuries since the days of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, Leah and Rachel, the basics of a spiritual reality have not changed at all. One is still One. Awakening is still Awakening. Now is still Now.

And Jacob awakened from his sleep, and he said: "Surely the Eternal One is in this place, but I had not realized it." (28:16)

Is that not the essential shape of all Awakenings? In the moment when we transcend the usual limits of personality and separate self we are able to realize the fullness of where we already are. It is in our Awakening that we most clearly understand the nature of our sleep, our unconsciousness of the fuller nature of this very space and time. Through our Awakening we suddenly are able to appreciate the depth of our usual trance, in which we have accepted boundaries of belief and identity which are only temporal fabrications.

Awakening is frightening for the lesser self because it opens us to territory beyond our control. It is a great challenge for the personality to release itself to the Unknowable Greater Self of which it is a part. But that is our consistent challenge. That is the nature of spiritual Awakening to which each of us is called. This Awakening is our birthright because it is the realization of the One we already are. There is no greater security. There is no greater Life.
